Should You Tour a Destination Wedding Venue?

Planning a destination wedding is an adventure, but deciding whether to hop on a plane to check out your venue can feel like a big decision. Are you the kind of person who needs to see it to believe it, or can you trust your planner and a virtual tour? Here are some of our thoughts on whether or not you should book that ticket!

Why You Might Want to Visit

If you’re the type of bride who likes to see, touch, and feel before making a decision, touring the venue in person might be a game-changer. Photos and videos are great, but there’s something about walking through the space that can’t be replicated. It’s the chance to soak in the vibe, see how the light hits the room, and visualize yourself walking down that aisle. If you’re a hands-on or Type A personality, this could be the reassurance you need to feel confident in your choice.

Another major perk? Meeting the people behind the scenes. Visiting in person gives you a chance to connect with the venue staff and your vendors. This face time can help build trust and smooth communication throughout the planning process. And if you’re planning to get married a year from now, a visit can give you a sense of what the venue will look like during your season. Is the garden blooming? Will the weather cooperate? These are things that can’t always be gauged through a screen.

Why You Might Skip the Trip

Now, let’s talk about the flip side. Traveling to visit a venue isn’t always feasible. Flights, accommodations, and time off from work can add up quickly, especially when you’re already juggling wedding expenses. If you’ve hired a trusted wedding planner, they’ll often have the experience and connections to guide you without the need for an in-person visit. Virtual tours, detailed photos, and walkthrough videos can go a long way in helping you make a confident decision—especially if your planner is there to fill in the gaps.

Another thing to keep in mind? Visiting out of season can sometimes mislead you. Sure, you might save on travel costs by going during the off-season, but the gardens may not be in bloom, or certain outdoor spaces might look less than magical. That’s not to say it’s not worth it, but it’s important to keep perspective.

Timing Is Everything

If you do decide to visit, when you go can make all the difference. Traveling during the off-season is budget-friendly and offers more one-on-one time with venue staff, but you might not get the full picture of how the venue will look on your wedding day. Shoulder season—right before the peak months—is a sweet spot: the venue is nearly ready to shine, but you’ll still avoid the crowds. Peak season, while more expensive, will show you exactly what you’re signing up for—flowers in full bloom, sunlight streaming in just right, and everything set to perfection

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, deciding whether to tour your destination venue comes down to what makes you feel most confident. If walking through the space and meeting the team will ease your mind, it’s worth considering. But if you trust your planner, are comfortable with virtual tools, and are managing a packed schedule, you can absolutely plan a show-stopping wedding from afar. The key is finding the balance that works for you.
